"Chronicles from 1994"
Magic The Gathering Old School

"The Spellbook of the Eternal Present: Knowledge, Strategy, and Authenticity"

The Genesis

The birth of Magic and the Garfield legacy.

In 1993, mathematician Richard Garfield brought Magic The Gathering to life, forever revolutionizing the world of gaming. The debut of the Alpha edition at the Gen Con convention was such an overwhelming success that millions of cards sold out instantly. The concept of collecting and building one's own spellbook immediately captivated players, combining deep strategy with iconic illustrations. Those original booster packs from 1993 did not just contain simple pieces of cardboard, but the very foundations of a myth. From those legendary first print runs, Old School begins: the pure origin of an eternal game.

The allure of Old School

"This game lives in an eternal present of superposed probabilities, where time is not a flowing line, but an illusion resolved by the entanglement of our moves."

1. "An eternal present of superposed probabilities"

  • In physics: Quantum superposition (think of Schrödinger's cat) states that until we look inside the box, a particle exists in all possible states simultaneously. Everything is infinite potential.
  • In Old School Magic: The format "stopped" in 1994-95. There are no new expansions disrupting the game every three months. This means the meta (the card pool) is crystallized. When you sit at the table with an Old School deck, the game belongs neither to the past nor the future: you live in an eternal present where those specific 60 cards always hold the exact same infinite potential they did over 30 years ago.

2. "Where time is not a flowing line, but an illusion..."

  • In physics: For Einstein and modern quantum physics, time is not a river flowing from past to future in an absolute way. Time is relative, and at a fundamental level, the past and the future already exist together.
  • In Old School Magic: Chronological time is an illusion. Away from the table you are in 2026, but as soon as you shuffle your deck, time barriers collapse. You are playing with the exact same rules, the same artwork, and the same card layouts from thirty years ago. Time has stopped; nostalgia fades because you are living that era right now, not just remembering it.

3. "...resolved by the entanglement of our moves."

  • In physics: Quantum entanglement occurs when two particles become so closely linked that what happens to one instantly influences the other, even if they are light-years apart. Space and time cease to matter to them.
  • In Old School Magic: The correlated "particles" are you, your opponent, and your plays (moves). The bond (entanglement) you create by dropping an Alpha land, casting a Black Lotus, or flipping a Chaos Orb instantly connects the kid you were in the '90s (or the very idea of that era) with the player you are today. The practical act of playing (the moves) is what "resolves" the illusion of time, merging past and present into a single, perfect moment.

The Perfect Chaos:
The Geometry of Deckbuilding

"When 60 cards unite to form a perfect library, the game dynamics find a balanced stability within a system where every single element answers to a meticulously designed plan. Despite this, the unpredictable quantum scenarios of individual draws, carrying their own weight of unknowns, can channel uncertainty right into the rigid lines of an Old School game plan, dragging it into perpetual chaos. It is a moment when everything seems lost and must be reinvented and adapted; a fragment of time where everything is in motion, yet enclosed within a finite cosmos. It is thus that the game finally returns to the cradle of a solid and harmonious architecture of the origins, never the same, like infinite universes, similar yet diverse."

Official Tournament Rules (n00bcon Standard)

The Old School format (often referred to as 93/94) follows the modern core rules of Magic, but strictly restricts the card pool to the very first sets in the game's history. Following the pure Swedish philosophy (n00bcon), only English versions of the cards that retain their original artwork and classic frame are allowed.

Banned cards

Note on Ante cards: All cards referencing the ante rule (such as Contract from Below, Darkpact, and Tempest Efreet) are strictly banned and must be removed from the deck before playing.

Official errata for dexterity cards

  • Chaos Orb: 1, Tap: Choose a nontoken permanent on the battlefield. If Chaos Orb is on the battlefield, flip Chaos Orb onto the battlefield from a height of at least one foot. If Chaos Orb turns over completely at least once during the flip, and touches the chosen permanent, destroy that permanent. Then destroy Chaos Orb.
  • Falling Star: Choose any number of non-overlapping creatures on the battlefield. Flip Falling Star onto the battlefield from a height of at least one foot. If Falling Star turns over completely at least once during the flip, it deals 3 damage to each chosen creature it touches. Any creatures damaged by Falling Star that are not destroyed become tapped.

Fair Flip Note: A fair flip is always guaranteed; you are allowed to temporarily move the target card to the center of the playing area to get a clear flip. Touching is checked only once the card comes to a complete rest on the table, not while it is in the air or if it bounces off.

The Foundations of Old School                    The core sets that started the myth

Alpha

Alpha (1993)

The quantum origin. The absolute first print run, with its characteristic, more rounded black corners. This is where it all began.

The Alpha Booster Box contains 36 packs.

Each Alpha pack in turn holds 15 random cards, originally divided into:

  • 1 rare
  • 3 uncommons
  • 11 commons (which could also include basic lands)

Beta

Beta (1993)

The perfect correction. It fixes the early printing errors and sets the geometric standard for the cards we still play today, in the shape of the card corners (much more rounded in Alpha than in Beta).
A concrete example of this "correction": Beta added two cards that had been left out of Alpha, Volcanic Island and Circle of Protection: Black.

The Beta Booster Box contains 36 packs, each holding the same number and types of cards as Alpha.

Unlimited Edition

Unlimited (1993)

The global explosion. The first set to sport white borders, printed to satisfy the first, overwhelming wave of collectors.

Summer Magic

Summer Magic (1994)

The Holy Grail of Old School. Also known as 'Edgar', this extremely rare and flawed print run was almost entirely destroyed by Wizards, turning it into pure legend.

The first expansions
The first expansions that broadened the universe

Arabian Nights

Arabian Nights (1993)

The first journey beyond the Core Set. Arabian Nights atmospheres for the expansion that introduced legendary dynamics like the Library of Alexandria.

Antiquities

Antiquities (1994)

The artifact war. The first true Magic Lore centered around the clash between Urza and Mishra, foundational for today's deck building.

Legends

Legends (1994)

The age of heroes. The expansion that introduced multicolored cards and legendary creatures for the first time, expanding the game's horizons.

The Dark

The Dark (1994)

The original darkness. Dark and gothic atmospheres for an expansion deeply loved for its unique and timeless artwork.
